Mr. Bob! I'm so glad to be following your work again. Daniel sent me the link to subscribe when we were together in Highlands last weekend. He brought up this article specifically during a lively conversation we were having about Christmas tree deliveries.
As I told him, Meredith was very pregnant with our son, Bennett, in November 2021, and I decided to cut out a few steps to save us some time (at an added expense, of course) during that busy season. A local Christmas tree nursery delivered a beautiful pre-lit tree to our home just before Thanksgiving and then removed it from our home after the new year. They used my provided tree stand and even vacuumed the mess on their way out. We swore we'd never go back to our old ways. We still go as a family to pick the tree out, but that's where the tradition ends. We'll see how long it lasts!
I don’t think I’ve had a real tree in over 50 years!! These days, I’m doing well if I get out the little “Charlie Brown” style tabletop tree. Fortunately I have understanding grandchildren. As long as they see presents and we play bingo, they’re not picky.
A short lived phase? I guess I missed the memo. After 47 years, I finally declared an end to putting up aluminum icicles. I'm still finding them here or there around the house two years later.
I keep telling my wife we should pursue an artificial tree but thus far, she has steadfastly refused and so we continue to liberate our red cedar trees from their earthly toil where ever we can find them. I think that explains my wife's hesitancy about artificial trees because our real trees have always been free and an artificial one isn't.
Haha Ed, I'm wondering if icicles are now regional? I haven't seen them around these since I was a child. Good on you for finally putting a stop to them! I love the idea of chopping down a real tree and have some memories of doing it as a very young child with my dad (cedar) and once with my own family at a tree farm where I believe we cut down some type of pine. That one, as I recall, was somewhat reasonable, before I completely took leave of my senses.
It probably isn't regional and just a family thing. Sitting here thinking, I can't recall the last time I saw a tree with icicles on it outside of my own home. Probably it has been decades.

Happy to be following along once again!
